When a digital project goes to GOAL

Often finding myself organizing digital processes in companies, I often wonder what is the best way to organize a project. The approaches can be varied and changeable depending on the scenario.

.....what if the project was managed like a football competition?

In this case the management (company) would organize itself with the coach (project-leader) trying to understand what actions should be taken to best manage the competition (project).

The coach, at this point can:

  1. Having a negative attitude towards competition: "we are not organised, there is no point in participating"

  2. Provide a reassuring picture: "we have an exceptional team, no problems"

  3. Make the management aware that "even though we have a good team, given the commitments, we should still organize training sessions aimed at increasing the quality of each player"

I try to analyze the points described above:

  1. Scenario 1 unlikely. This would mean that the coach accepted the job for reasons other than the sporting competition: you don't accept if you don't have the hope of playing it: the players will never follow the instructions given, and a team will never exist.

  2. Scenario 2, even if it were true, would lead nowhere. With that type of statement, significant expectations are created that, by raising the level of the minimum objective, will then have to be confirmed. Furthermore, in the presence of an exceptional team, failure to achieve 100 percent of the objective would fall on the coach. The team would suffer from media pressure that it may not be used to.

  3. Scenario 3 instead seems to me to be the most correct approach. Correct both towards the management, which will not stand on a pedestal waiting for events; correct towards the team, which is recognized for its quality; correct towards the coach himself: he must work hard to bring out the qualities already present in the team.

By managing projects, digital ones as far as I'm concerned, with the scenario 3 approach you will have a better chance of not falling into uncontrollable situations.

  • The management (direction) will be aware of the qualities of the team, they will have to understand if those present will be sufficient to achieve the objective or if they will have to worry about adding others.

  • The players (stakeholders) will feel "of quality", therefore they will behave in a proactive and professional way "making themselves available to the coach"

  • The coach (project leader), in addition to having players who operate in a professional manner, knows that he must commit himself to getting the best.

...and the fans?

At this point the fans (users) will lend a hand from the stands to ensure that the team (team project) achieves the desired results and makes a
