Information is just bits of data. Knowledge unifies them. Wisdom transcends them.
Relationships between data, information, knowledge and wisdom
Data Wisdom is based on the DIKW model.
Data Wisdom requires moving through these four levels, transforming data into information, information into knowledge, and knowledge into wisdom. Data Wisdom also involves managing data ethically, respecting privacy, security and data quality. Data Wisdom is a critical skill for today's digital world, where data is a valuable and powerful resource.
Data (Data): This is the most basic level. Data is raw, unprocessed facts, such as numbers, words, and measurements. They have no meaning in themselves until they are organized or analyzed.
Information: When data is processed, organized or structured in some way, it becomes information. Information has context and can be used to answer simple questions like “who,” “what,” “when,” and “where.”
Knowledge: Knowledge emerges when information is put together and analyzed to find patterns or trends. At this level, information is used to answer “how.”
Wisdom: Wisdom is the highest level of the hierarchy. It is the ability to apply knowledge effectively to make judgments, make informed decisions, and solve complex problems. Wisdom involves high understanding and thoughtful, ethical application of knowledge.
In the context of "Data Wisdom", we highlight the importance of going beyond simple data collection and analysis. It's about deeply understanding data and using it ethically and strategically to guide decisions and actions. This requires a combination of experience, intuition and critical understanding.
